microRNAs are a class of endogenous, small non‑coding RNA molecules approximately 20–25 nucleotides in length. They play a key role in gene expression regulation. By binding to target messenger RNAs, they trigger mRNA degradation or translational inhibition, thereby “silencing” or regulating the expression of specific genes at the post‑transcriptional level. microRNAs are crucial in cell differentiation, development, metabolism, aging, and the onset and progression of numerous diseases, making them a frontier and core area in modern molecular biology, functional nutrition, and anti‑aging research.

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of the role of microRNAs in post‑transcriptional gene regulation.
